Transplant Immunology: Organ transplant is currently one of the most outstanding treatment options for patients with end stage organ failure. For example, kidney transplant is a highly preferred treatment modality for patients with end stage kidney failure, since it enhances quality of life and it financially favorable when compared to other treatment options.
Organ Transplant: A transplant surgery requires a team work of various departments. Transplant immunology is one of the most important rings in this chain. This is the most critical stage, through which tissue compatibility between organ donor and recipient is detected. A successful transplant can be carried out only after necessary criteria are met at this stage. The first challenge in a transplant surgery is the structural difference (antigenic features) between recipients and donors. Structural antigens of the donor, which are alien to the recipient, activate recipient’s immune system and trigger an immune response. As a result, adverse damages occur in the transplanted organ. In order to minimize or prevent such reactions, genetic compatibility between recipient and donor should be well determined, interpreted and the most suitable donor should be selected in light of the aforementioned criteria.
Tissue Typing and Transplant Immunology Laboratory: At Tissue Typing and Transplant Immunology Laboratory of Başkent University Istanbul Hospital, all necessary tests are carried out with most contemporary methods before tissue and organ transplantation.
